SUMMARY:GEOHAB 2024 Conference "Marine Geological and Biological Habitat Mapping"
DESCRIPTION: This May\, from the 6 to 10\, 2024\, the annual Marine Geological and Biological Habitat Mapping Conference will be held in Arendal\, Norway.  \nGeoHab is an international association of marine scientists studying biophysical indicators of benthic habitats and ecosystem. Their main goals are: \n\nSupport the government spatial marine planning\, sustainable ocean management and decision making.\nSupport the design of marine protected areas (MPAs).\nConduct scientific research programs aimed at generating knowledge of benthic ecosystems and seafloor geology.\nConduct seabed resources assessments for economic and management purposes.\n\nThis non-profit organization has emerged as a relevant platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the field of marine habitat mapping. With annual conferences held on various continents\, they offer a unique opportunity for the gathering of experts and professionals committed to marine research and conservation. Their conferences are hosted by volunteers and sponsored by universities\, government’s departments and their private sector industry partners. \nOn this event\, Andrew J. Wheeler (University College Cork)\, the Work Package 2 leader\, will deliver a presentation introducing TRIDENT to the GeoHab community. He will focus on the environmental baseline developed as part of the EU’s TRIDENT project. Heidy Dias (Queen’s University Belfast) will as well give a short presentation on a case study that introduces a biotope classification scheme developed for a deep sea site\, and it is based on innovative approaches in environmental impact assessment for deep sea mining. \nFor more information about the conference\, visit their website here.

SUMMARY:EU SuperCluster Lapland Geoconference
DESCRIPTION:The SuperCluster Lapland Geoconference will take place right before the 14th Fennoscandian Exploration and Mining (FEM) 2023 conference. This represents a significant effort to address the EU’s dependency on critical raw materials and promote self-sufficiency in mineral supply. Some of the key points about the event are: \n\nDependency on Critical Raw Materials. The EU relies heavily on a limited number of countries for critical raw materials\, which are essential for strategic industries like e-mobility\, batteries\, and renewable energy.\nOpportunity for Self-Sufficiency. Europe has the potential to become self-sufficient\, resilient\, sustainable\, and responsible in its supply of critical minerals due to its geological resources and significant mineral endowment.\nMulti-Element Mining. Critical raw materials are often obtained as by-products from primary commodity mines. Transitioning to a multi-element mining approach is necessary\, requiring new exploration methods and concepts.\nEU-Funded Projects. Thirteen EU-funded raw materials projects and the University of Queensland (Australia) are collaborating to organize the European Union SuperCluster Lapland Geoconference. These projects focus on research and development in the raw materials sector.\n\nThe main objective is to bring together a diverse range of stakeholders\, including the European Commission\, EU projects\, regional authorities\, industrial representatives\, exploration companies\, and other interested parties in order to discuss technological challenges and topics related to the raw materials sector. \nThe SuperCluster event will host more than 130 participants\, including individuals and companies\, who don’t typically attend the FEM conference. The target audience includes the European Commission\, EU projects\, regional authorities\, industrial representatives\, exploration companies\, and other stakeholders in the raw materials sector. \nThis initiative represents a crucial step in addressing the EU’s raw materials challenges and fostering cooperation among stakeholders to enhance the region’s self-sufficiency in critical minerals. It provides a platform for sharing ideas and innovations in raw materials exploration and supply. \nEvent Structure and schedule:\nThe event will include 20-minute oral sessions\, poster presentations\, and dedicated discussion time to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration. There are no planned keynote talks\, with a focus on hearing from as many EU-funded project participants as possible. \nThe meeting will commence on Monday\, October 30th\, with registration and refreshments starting at 09:30. \nOral presentations are divided into five sessions between October 30th and 31st: \n\nSession 1: Innovative mineral exploration: 30th at 10.15 – 12.00\nSession 2: Earth observation in exploration and mining: 30th at 13.15 – 15.00\nSession 3: Environmental\, Social and Governance in exploration and mining: 30th at 15.30 – 17.30\nSession 4: CRMs supply: 31st at 08.30 – 10.00\nSession 5: New frontiers for exploration: 31st at 10.30 – 11.45\n\n \nEduardo Silva\, from INESC TEC\, will present TRIDENT with an oral presentation\, followed by a poster presentation by LPRC. \nThe conference is free and lunches and conference dinner is free as well for the registered participants.
