SUMMARY:GEOHAB 2024 Conference "Marine Geological and Biological Habitat Mapping"
DESCRIPTION: This May\, from the 6 to 10\, 2024\, the annual Marine Geological and Biological Habitat Mapping Conference will be held in Arendal\, Norway.  \nGeoHab is an international association of marine scientists studying biophysical indicators of benthic habitats and ecosystem. Their main goals are: \n\nSupport the government spatial marine planning\, sustainable ocean management and decision making.\nSupport the design of marine protected areas (MPAs).\nConduct scientific research programs aimed at generating knowledge of benthic ecosystems and seafloor geology.\nConduct seabed resources assessments for economic and management purposes.\n\nThis non-profit organization has emerged as a relevant platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the field of marine habitat mapping. With annual conferences held on various continents\, they offer a unique opportunity for the gathering of experts and professionals committed to marine research and conservation. Their conferences are hosted by volunteers and sponsored by universities\, government’s departments and their private sector industry partners. \nOn this event\, Andrew J. Wheeler (University College Cork)\, the Work Package 2 leader\, will deliver a presentation introducing TRIDENT to the GeoHab community. He will focus on the environmental baseline developed as part of the EU’s TRIDENT project. Heidy Dias (Queen’s University Belfast) will as well give a short presentation on a case study that introduces a biotope classification scheme developed for a deep sea site\, and it is based on innovative approaches in environmental impact assessment for deep sea mining. \nFor more information about the conference\, visit their website here.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Deep Sea Webinar
DESCRIPTION:A clustering webinar of EU-funded projects on environmental assessment of deep-sea ecosystems. \n\n\n\n   Following the success of the first TRIDENT clustering webinar in April 2024\, we are excited to host the second one\, taking place in November 18th\, 2025 from 11:00 to 13:00 CET (10:00h – 12:00h WET). This session aims to foster collaborative dialogue among projects at the forefront of deep-sea environmental science\, providing a platform for knowledge exchange\, discussion\, and the advancement of sustainable practices in deep-sea research and management. \n\n\n\nThe webinar will feature contributions from several prominent Horizon Europe and JPI Oceans projects. MiningImpact (GEOMAR / JPI Oceans) investigates the ecological consequences of deep-sea mining\, developing indicators for ecosystem health and thresholds for serious harm. GES4SEAS (Fundación AZTI) works to inform marine governance and reduce human pressures on biodiversity\, focusing on deep-sea ecosystems such as the Deep Atlantic–Mediterranean transition. REDRESS (Università Politecnica delle Marche) identifies degraded deep-sea habitats and guides restoration efforts through environmental baselines and thresholds. Finally\, BioProtect (Matis Ohf) aims to protect and restore deep-sea ecosystems through biodiversity monitoring\, citizen science\, and innovative tools such as eDNA sampling. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will explore how different projects define and assess deep-sea ecosystem health\, discuss the role of environmental baselines and thresholds in impact assessment\, conservation\, and restoration planning\, and share lessons learned from monitoring\, modelling\, and fieldwork. The session will also highlight opportunities for cross-project collaboration and data sharing and consider how these efforts contribute to broader EU policy goals\, including the Nature Restoration Law\, promoting sustainable ocean stewardship. \n\n\n\nFind the registration link in the agenda\, we look fordward to seeing you there! \n\n

SUMMARY:Trident technology to be featured at Seabed Minerals 2026 in Bergen
DESCRIPTION:Trident will take part in the international Seabed Minerals 2026 conference\, held from 24–26 March 2026 in Bergen\, Norway\, with an expert presentation included in the official conference programme.  \nBramley Murton from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) will deliver the presentation\, titled “Towards a long-term autonomous system to monitor in-situ disturbances arising from deep water seafloor industrial activity.” The talk will highlight the development of Trident’s long-term autonomous monitoring system for deep-sea industrial activities. Designed to operate in extreme and remote seafloor environments\, the system provides continuous\, in situ environmental monitoring\, supporting real-time data analysis and impact assessment to ensure transparent and responsible oversight.   \nFor more information about the conference\, visit their website: https://geopublishing.no/event/seabedminerals/
